How a one time trip to Disneyland became a business…

I’m sure that those who know me think that we are crazy for going to Disneyland so much. Especially since we don’t even live remotely close to Anaheim. But let me tell you a little story about how a one time trip turned into a business that I LOVE and look forward to working on every day.

About 5 years ago we decided to go to Disneyland as a family. We were going to meet my SIL and her family there and had been saving our dollars for the past few months. The hotel was booked and the excitement was building as no one except myself had ever been.

Then about a month before we were supposed to go, an unexpected curveball was thrown our way that knocked us off our feet.

My husband got laid off from work.

To say it rocked our world is an understatement.

The tears that fell from my eyes definitely came from a place of fear and what the future would bring, but I think the bulk of my tears were knowing that we were going to need to take the money for our Disney trip and leave it in savings for an unknown amount of time.

One MAJOR blessing though was that we were going to have it be a surprise to our kiddos and so we hadn’t told them about the trip. Such a comfort to not have to see the look of disappointment in their faces if we had told them.

Anyhow, once the shock wore off and we rolled up our sleeves and got to work, I determined that within one year we would take them to Disneyland.

And so I worked and worked and worked! I did everything I could to take on extra work and then set that money aside for our dream vacation that we had to put on hold.

When my deadline was fast approaching, I realized I was still a little short and couldn’t figure out how to make up the difference.

Panic was real here folks! Sure I could have put off that deadline, but that is not in my nature! I WAS GOING TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

Enter Disney Yes Education.

We heard about this program in a facebook group we are a part of and by enrolling our kids in these classes that Disney offers onsite we were able to get discount tickets. The discount offered was the exact amount that I was short by. INCREDIBLE!! Miracle of miracles!!

So by now, I’m sure you’re thinking, but how did this turn into a business? Good question!

When we went for the first time and my kiddos gathered for their small little class I stood there and thought, this is such an amazing opportunity for kids to learn about real-life educational applications. I also thought, because of this program it allowed families like mine who couldn’t otherwise afford to go, be able to visit the happiest place on earth.

And then a massive lightbulb went off!

I needed to do this on a massive scale for kids everywhere!!

So right in front of the Disney train station was where Savvy School Travels was born. It’s evolved over the years and I couldn’t be happier with where we are headed. Over 400 students and counting have had the opportunity to learn from Disney educators how what they’ve been taught at school or home can be used in the real world. Families have made unforgettable memories and saved money by booking this experience through us.

And that is how I turned a one time Disneyland trip into a business.
